Third-party contributions are partially credited towards the DAAD scholarship. The amount of the credit is calculated individually after the scholarship has been awarded. Information on this can be found in theimportant scholarship information in section E.

Requirements
- The start of the doctoral studies must not be more than three years ago at the application deadline, unless there are special reasons (seeImportant scholarship information / Section A, Point 5).
- The application must be accompanied by a letter of confirmation from a university lecturer that they will supervise the doctorate, as well as confirmation from the home university that the dissertation topic has been assigned ( DAAD form ).
- The research project must have been agreed upon with a university lecturer at the home university and the foreign host institution.
The preparation for the stay abroad, in particular the acquisition of a job at the foreign host institution and the necessary arrangements for project implementation, must be completed at the time of application.
Interview Dates and Process
During the selection process, the DAAD obtains written expert opinions from university lecturers.
Language skills:
The invitation letter from the host university must include confirmation that the applicant has the necessary language skills to conduct the research project. A language certificate is not required.
Selection criteria:
The selection decision will be made on the basis of the following criteria:
1. Scientific and professional qualifications, in particular as measured by:
- Academic achievements and duration of study
- Scientific achievements after graduation (publications)
2. Quality of the research project, particularly measured by:
- Quality of the technical presentation of the research project and the preparatory work
- Originality, topicality and relevance of the project
- Justification for the stay abroad and the choice of the host institute
- Feasibility and consistency of the work and schedule (analysis and evaluation steps, language skills if necessary)
- Integration of the project into the overall doctoral project (content/time)
- the importance of the research project and the stay abroad for your own scientific and professional plans
3. Academic and professional potential of the applicant, particularly measured by:
- Motivation: professional and personal reasons for the stay abroad, knowledge of the local language (if different from the working language); regional knowledge
- Perspectives: Importance of the research project and the stay abroad for further academic, professional and personal development
- extracurricular activities: extracurricular knowledge and skills, social engagement

- Letter of motivation (max. 3 pages): Explanation of the professional and personal motives for your planned project (see important scholarship information / Section B, Point 7)
- List of publications, if available
- Summary of the master's thesis (approx. 1 page)
- A detailed description of your dissertation proposal (5-10 pages) including:
- a description of the current research and work status
- a justification for the need for the stay abroad.
Since research stays are generally to be conducted at the IFI partner institutes, please provide detailed reasons for choosing a different host institution. Any exceptions must be approved by the Academic Program Advisory Board.
- Schedule for the stay abroad: in tabular form, with monthly and, if necessary, weekly details of the planned work steps
- Cover sheet consisting of a brief summary of the research project and the (provisional, if applicable) title of the work (max. half a page), as well as a maximum of five keywords and the application's subject classification according to the ACM Computing Classification System (CCS). The cover sheet is required to assign the application to a suitable reviewer.
- Confirmation of supervision by the foreign supervisor (with letterhead of the host institute and signature of the host), which states that...
1) the research project has been discussed in detail with the host,
2) the language skills required for research work at the host institute are available, and
3) if the application is successful, the host institute will provide a workplace
- Degree certificates (Bachelor, Master, each with individual grades)
- Transcript of Records (Bachelor, Master)
- Confirmation of the assignment of the dissertation topic on the DAAD form "Confirmation of the assignment of the dissertation topic"
- A recent, supporting letter of recommendation from your doctoral supervisor.
The letter of recommendation consists of a free-form section and a cover sheet (generated in the portal). Please upload both in the portal under "Letters of Recommendation." Further information on the letter of recommendation can be found in the "About the Application" tab under "The Application Process Step by Step."
All documents must be submitted in German or English.
Note on the application documents:
Data protection: Application documents remain with the DAAD and become its property. Your personal data will be stored by the DAAD in accordance with the Federal Data Protection Act and the EU General Data Protection Regulation to the extent necessary to process your application or scholarship. The documents of unsuccessful applicants will be deleted after a reasonable period of time.

- Under "Create Letter of Recommendation Form," you can generate the cover sheet for the letter of recommendation as a fillable PDF in the DAAD portal.
Please send the form to your university instructor with a request to complete it completely and attach a freely worded letter of recommendation (as explained in the form). Please upload both documents during the application process in the portal in the "Attachments" step under "Letter of Recommendation ." Sending the letter of recommendation by email is not possible.
