The research at the Institute of Clinical Pathology and the research group of Prof. Dr. Dr. Christoph Schell is looking for a highly motivated PhD student in natural sciences for our interdisciplinary research team (MatriPath Lab), which investigates the composition and role of the tumor microenvironment (TME) in the context of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (within the framework of SFB 1453). A particular focus is on the reciprocal interaction between the extracellular matrix and the cells of the TME. Our lab has many years of expertise in investigating cell-matrix interactions and their influence on complex kidney pathologies (e.g., Rogg et al. – Science Advances 2025, Rogg et al. – JASN 2022 – PMID: 35260418; Braun et al. – JCI 2023 – PMID: 37014703 – further information about the research group: https://www.uniklinik-freiburg.de/pathologie/forschung/ag-schell-1.html).
Within this project, the group aim to understand how the extracellular matrix composition influences intercellular crosstalk within the TME of clear cell renal cell carcinomas. The group will utilize a complementary portfolio of methods, including primary cell isolation, multiplex immunofluorescence microscopy, ex vivo tumor models, and CRISRP/Cas9 modifications.
