Volkswagen PhD Student Steering System Development: Condition Monitoring (f/m/d) 2025

The development of future vehicles with software-based functions places a variety of new demands on vehicle components, including the steering system. Against this background, the steering system development of the Volkswagen Group Components at the Braunschweig site develops a steer-by-wire system, in which today's mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels disapears. The department has competencies at all system levels, from the mechanical design of the steering systems on the selection and specification of electronic components to the in-house development of software. Due to the purely electronic nature of steer-by-wire data connection between the steering wheel and the wheels there are high safety requirements for the electrical, electronic and mechanical components of the system. This also includes the monitoring and ensuring functionality and availability throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle.

Possible Tasks within this Role

  • Analyzing the electronic and mechanical components of the steering system with regard to its wear and failure behaviour
  • Conducting experiments, measurements and simulations at various steering systems
  • Analyzing the data obtained, also using new methods, e.g. artificial intelligence
  • Conceptualizing and developing new software functions to monitor the condition of electronic and mechanical assemblies of the steering system
  • Parameterizing and verifying the robustness of the functions

The final doctoral topic is defined together with the professor. The prerequisite for the cooperation is the confirmation of supervision as well as a confirmed delimitation of topics by the professor of a university or research institution entitled to confer a doctorate.
