Volkswagen PhD Student Innovative Laser Beam Welding Technology 2025

The Battery Technology Center is responsible for transferring the latest process developments into prototype and series production. Our sub-department verifies the suitability of concepts and series production. Existing equipment and corresponding test technology and planning enable the necessary process parameters to be determined. A key technology is the laser welding process for contacting battery cells to produce a battery stack. The determination of weld seam geometry and the definition of parameters depend on many influencing factors. A systematic analysis and derivation of the interrelationships has not yet been developed, thus revealing a scientific gap.

Possible Tasks within this Role

  • Systematically selecting and designing laser welding technologies in the battery environment
  • Developing a methodology for designing weld seams based on requirements and enabling the transferability of results to other geometries and material alloys
  • Optimizing seam geometry through modeling and optionally integrating AI methods
  • Establishing correlations, such as between bonding area and strength requirements of laser weld seams in battery stacks
  • Considering FEM analysis of material behavior
