University of Hamburg Research Associate for the Project Feedback in Galaxy Custers and Groups 2026

We seek to appoint a researcher to conduct radioastronomical research focusing on galaxy clusters and groups at the Observatory of the University of Hamburg. This position is part of a Germany wide research group that works on Relativistic Jets in Active Galactic Nuclei.

Successful candidates will have published research conducted with the radio telescopes and ideally have experience with polarisation observations, spectral index and multi-wavelength studies. The goal of this work, funded by the German Research Foundation, is to study diffuse radio sources and AGN in galaxy clusters. German language skills are not required.

The successful applicant will be based on the Hamburg Observatory campus. Scientists at Hamburg Observatory cover a wide range of research areas of modern astrophysics, such as extragalactic astronomy, cosmology, galaxy formation, gravitational waves and statistical analysis including artificial intelligence. Our 9 individual research groups provide a diverse and stimulating research environment. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be able to benefit from the Observatory's close ties with other research institutes in Hamburg, including DESY and the Cluster of Excellence "Quantum Universe". Generous computing resources as well as travel funding will be available to the successful candidate.

Requirements

  • a university degree in Physics
  • excellent command of English and great communication skills
  • published work in radio astronomy and the study of galaxy clusters
  • documented experience with radio interferometers
  • documented coding skills
