University of Bonn International Fellowships 2025

The Bonn International Fellowships are designed to bring excellent scholars from all disciplines to the University of Bonn for up to 12 days of academic exchange, collaboration, and public engagement. The program aims to strengthen international partnerships and create long-term collaborative research projects between the visiting fellow and their Bonn host.

Fellows are expected to participate actively in the academic life of the university—through public lectures, seminars, or colloquiums—and help establish or deepen ties between their home institutions and Bonn.

Benefits

  • Travel allowance based on the fellow’s country of origin
  • €160 per day for up to 12 days (includes arrival and departure days)
  • Event material expenses up to €500 per proposal (e.g. catering, outreach, PR)
  • Support for public relations and academic visibility events.

Requirements

This opportunity is open to postdoctoral and senior-level researchers who:

  • Work and conduct research outside of Germany
  • Have a strong international academic reputation
  • Are formally invited by a faculty member at the University of Bonn
  • Are not previous recipients of this fellowship

Note: Individual scholars cannot apply independently. Applications must be submitted by the University of Bonn host who intends to invite the fellow.

Interview Dates and Process

  • Scientific reputation of the fellows in their areas of specialization
  • The fellows’ contribution to academic life in Bonn (e.g. through public lectures, seminars or colloquiums)
  • The expected longer-term impact of the stay and a plan to further develop the collaboration between the fellow and host institute in Bonn

  • Project description (PDF of no more than 6 pages plus fellow’s declaration of consent), consisting of:
    1. Planned time period for the fellow’s visit (month)
    2. Reasons for inviting the fellow, in particular an account of their key research accomplishments and international reputation
    3. If applicable: an overview of the existing collaboration between the applicant and the fellow
    4. A plan of how the fellow will be integrated into Bonn’s academic life during his or her stay
    5. A description of the envisaged short- or long-term outcome of the stay; if applicable, a plan or list of goals for further collaboration
    6. The fellow’s informal declaration of consent to the application
