The International Office awards the Equal Opportunity Scholarship via the DAAD’s STIBET I Program, which is funded by the Federal Foreign Office. The scholarship is intended for international students who have extenuating circumstances during their studies.

Funding amount: Between 250 and 992 euros per month
Requirements
RWTH students and doctoral candidates who are pursuing a regular degree program at RWTH and meet the following criteria can apply:
- You have extenuating and verifiable circumstances during your studies (e.g. special caring for children (0 to 12 years) or relatives in need of care, disability/chronic illness (from 50 percent), refugee background, financial hardship as a result of the war or difficulty returning to your home country).
- You are enrolled or are being supervised at RWTH.
- You are in Germany for the entire funding period.
- Your studies or doctorate will continue until at least December 2025.
- You are an international student (university entrance qualification not obtained at a school in Germany or a German school abroad).
- You do not have German citizenship.
- You will not receive any other scholarship for the funding period (July to December 2025).
Interview Dates and Process
The scholarship holders will be selected at the beginning of June 2025 by a committee of representatives from RWTH Aachen University. The selection will be based on various criteria. The funding amount and funding period will be decided during the selection meeting and on the basis of the information submitted by the individual applicants. There is no entitlement to funding.
Application Documents
- Application form including a detailed description of the extenuating circumstances related to their studies
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- Identity documents and residence permit including any supplementary sheet (copy on both sides)
- Certificate of enrollment (Summer Semester 2025)
- Current transcript of records with grade point average or Confirmation of Supervision for doctoral students.
- Suitable proof of the extenuating circumstances: birth certificate of children, documents from care insurance, medical certificate or disability ID card, residence permit, or recognized refugee status et cetera. Please contact us ahead of the application deadline to discuss which documents apply to your situation.
- BAföG notification or rejection, if applicable
- If applicable, an employment contract, including a payslip (if your gross income exceeds 556 euros, the scholarship amount will be reduced). If the secondary employment is terminated at the beginning or during the scholarship phase or the number of hours is changed, proof must also be submitted.
- Bank statements of all accounts for the last three months (this also includes joint accounts for married couples)
