RWTH Aachen PhD Student In The Field of Multi-energy and Distribution Grid Planning Scholarship 2025

The Chair of Active Energy Distribution Grids (AEV) at the Institute for High Voltage Equipment and Grids, Digitalization and Energy Economics (IAEW) is part of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at RWTH Aachen University. At the Chair of Active Energy Distribution Grids, we are researching the essential building blocks of the future electrical energy system that will enable the transition to a climate-neutral society. As part of our team, you will work on innovative research projects in the field of multi-energy systems with the aim of obtaining a doctorate. The focus is on electrical systems (AC, DC and hybrid systems), gas and heat networks and their interaction. You will have the opportunity to deepen your specialist knowledge by applying mathematical optimization methods, e.g. with Gurobi or CPLEX, and programming with Python or MATLAB.

Benefits

  • The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
  • The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of 1 year.
  • It is intended to extend the initial contract period by four further years.
  • The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
  • This is a full-time position.
  • The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
  • The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
  • The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.

Requirements

  • You possess a very good university degree (Master's or comparable) with a focus on electrical engineering or a related course of study (e.g. computer science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics)
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English.
  • You enjoy working independently on projects that require you to analyze complex problems, find creative solutions and implement them consistently.
  • You are able to organize and carry out your work independently and you enjoy working in a young and motivated team.
  • You like to share your scientific results both in writing and in the form of presentations with colleagues and scientific audiences.
  • You are keen to acquire sound technical knowledge and to grow as a professional researcher.
  • You are interested in developing theoretical ideas into practical solutions.
