PhD Student in the Optimal Transport Research Group at the University of Göttingen 2026

The Georg-August-University Göttingen Foundation under Public Law – Institute of Computer Science seeks a PhD student in the Optimal Transport research group.

The doctoral candidate will work within the "Optimal Transport" research group of Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schmitzer as part of the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded project "The Sinkhorn distance: the Riemannian structure of entropic optimal transport." The project focuses on the geometry of entropy-regulated optimal transport, efficient numerical approximations, manifold learning in the space of probability measures, and the application of these methods to statistical biophysical image analysis.

Requirements

• You hold a Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, computer science, or physics.
• You have experience with numerical optimization and scientific computing environments such as Python, Matlab, or similar.
• You are interested in working in an interdisciplinary team with an experimental laboratory.
• You are fluent in written and spoken English.
• Prior knowledge of optimal transportation and non-Euclidean statistics is a significant advantage.
