Forschungszentrum Jülich PhD – ??Digital twin for the optimization of Power-to-X systems (f/m/d)

The PHOENIX - Launch Space Power-to-X joint project plays a key role in aligning the innovation cycles of P2X technologies with the long-term goals of the energy transition, the European Green Deal, and the lignite phase-out. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, the project focuses on two key aspects: accelerated technology development and the sustainable design of P2X value chains. Play an active role in shaping the energy transition! As part of your doctorate, you will develop digital twins and advanced diagnostic methods for power-to-X systems – from high-temperature electrolysis (SOEC) to fuel cell technology (SOFC). The goal is to integrate these key technologies into industrial applications and develop innovative methods for monitoring, diagnostics, and operational optimization. The focus is on biogas valorization, syngas production using co-electrolysis, and reversible SOC systems. With your research, you will make a direct contribution to the implementation of national and European climate targets.

Your tasks in detail:

  • Further development of measurement and test benches for high-temperature environments using robust, optimally positioned sensors.
  • Planning, conducting, and evaluating long-term and transient tests (realistic load profiles) at the stack and component level in close collaboration with the Electrochemical Measurement Technology group.
  • Development of model- and data-based methods for the early detection, isolation, and identification of faults and malfunctions, as well as for determining the system state of health.
  • Implementation of the developed methods on edge hardware for real-time analysis and linking with operating and control strategies.
  • Development and implementation of a digital twin for the rSOC system for condition monitoring and optimization of operational management.
  • Presentation of research results at national and international conferences and publication in renowned journals.
  • Supervision and technical support of students and theses in the areas of monitoring, diagnostics, and data analysis.
