DAAD Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds: Travel Grants 2025

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds travel grants are aimed at doctoral, MD and post-doctoral students who pursue experimental projects in basic biomedical research and who wish to learn methods relevant to their current research. To this end, the grant finances the participation in practical training courses or short-term research stays in other laboratories. The travel grant programme is open to all Europeans and to non-Europeans working in Europe to go to institutes or courses worldwide. Non-Europeans working outside Europe can apply for stays in Europe. Travel grants are awarded for up to 3 months and encompass a contribution which may cover the expenses for travel, lodging, and course fees.

Benefits

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) travel grants are awarded for research stays of up to three months. They support junior scientists who want to learn clearly-defined methods useful for their ongoing research and their current laboratory by

  • Visiting another laboratory
  • Attending research-orientated courses with the practical part making up at least 50 % of the course.

They can also be used by PhD candidates and their potential supervisors to evaluate the scientific and personal fit before the start of a PhD project in another country by funding a research stay of one to three months in the supervisor’s laboratory.

Allowance which may cover the expenses for travel to and from the respective destination, lodging, and course fees

Requirements

  • PhD students or medical students pursuing an experimental doctoral thesis in basic research in biomedicine
  • Postdocs who are pursuing an experimental project in basic research in biomedicine
  • Graduates who have applied for an experimental PhD project in basic research in biomedicine, but who have not yet worked with their potential PhD supervisors

The recipients of the funding are Europeans who work in Europe and overseas, as well as non-European citizens who carry out their MD, PhD or postdoc project in Europe or who use the travel grant to work in Europe.

Academic Requirement:

  • Good academic standing and at least a BSc

Interview Dates and Process

Once the application is received, it is carefully examined by the BIF's staff. They check whether it fulfils the formal requirements and evaluate it according to the criteria listed above.

The entire selection process takes about six weeks. The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds informs the applicant immediately about the decision taken.

Applications for a Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) travel grant are selected according to their quality as reflected by these criteria:

  • Applicant's achievements to date (e.g. grades)
  • Originality of the current and planned research projects
  • Scientific standard of the laboratories in which the applicant is presently working and where he/she is planning to work
  • Relevance of the research stay to the applicant's current research project and his/her current laboratory.

Application Documents

Information on projects or courses

Depending on whether you are applying for a research stay, a course, or a PhD candidate visit, you are asked to provide different information/documents.

  1. Title and summary of your current research project (BSc, MSc, PhD, MD, or postdoctoral project) focussing on aims, experimental strategy, and, if applicable, results obtained. Results must be accompanied by meaningful figures (3–5 pages plus references)
  2. Research stay, visit: title of planned training and detailed description of your experiments in the host laboratory (max. 3 pages) as well as the aim of the training and your reasons for wishing to work with the chosen laboratory
    Course: title of course and a detailed description how the course will impact your current research
  3. Research stay: Statement describing the connection of the planned training with your current research project and how your current laboratory will profit from your research stay.
    Course: Statement describing how you and your current laboratory will profit from the course
  4. List of your publications (if applicable).

Additional documents

  1. Scans of certificates of all examinations (e.g. PhD, MSc, BSc, MD) in chronological order, newest first. If their language is other than English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or Turkish, please provide a translation.
  2. Scans of high school diploma/secondary school leaving certificate (e.g. Abitur, Baccalaureate, A-Levels) and, where applicable, university entrance test (e.g. SAT/ACT, PAU, YGS/LYS, Joint Entrance Examination etc.). If their language is other than English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or Turkish, please provide a translation.
  3. Letter of acceptance, signed and on official letterhead for:
    Research stay:
     from the supervisor of the host laboratory stating that the host institute will cover research-related costs
    Course: from the course organizers including details of tuition fees and other costs
    Visit: from the supervisor of the host laboratory stating that the host institute will cover research-related costs and confirming that he/she is willing and able to offer a PhD position to you if the research stay was successful for both sides
  4. Letter of recommendation, signed and on official letterhead:
    Research stay, course: the supervisor of your current research project including his/her statement that your salary will be continued during your absence
    Visit: the supervisor of your final thesis (MSc/BSc)
  5. Evidence of expenses (PDF of quotes, no links): for travel (issued by a travel agent and/or internet agency), for economic student housing, and, if applicable, for course fees. The number of days between arrival and departure shown on the quotes may not exceed the total number of days of the course or research stay by more than two days.
