The Institute of Art History at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg is seeking a Research Associate (m/f/d) for the newly filled professorship in Art History (modern and contemporary art) starting on April 1, 2026. This is a part-time position (50% TV-L E13) with the opportunity for further qualification (doctorate).
Your tasks:
- As a research associate, you will support the Chair of Art History (Modern and Contemporary Art) in research, teaching, and university administration.
- You will contribute to the conception and implementation of courses, lecture series, and research projects.
- You are expected to complete a doctoral dissertation during your employment at the University of Freiburg. The focus of your dissertation should be on a topic within the arts from the 19th to the 21st century.
- Your presence at the Institute of Art History is required.

Requirements
- Successfully completed university studies in art history or a related discipline
- PhD project on a topic in modern or contemporary art
- Above-average interest in current debates in the field
- Sound knowledge of the theories, methods, and tools of art history
- Enthusiasm for the subject and its communication in universities and the general public
- Experience in curatorial or museological fields, or in the Digital Humanities, is desirable.
- Excellent German and English skills, both spoken and written.
- High motivation, communication and teamwork skills, didactic skills, reliability
