2026 PhD Researchers in Food Systems Analysis and One Health at the University of Gottingen

The successful candidate will work on the project  “Networking food value chains - via Graph Neural Networks in Lower Saxony” (food system transformation - via Graph Neural Networks taking the case of Lower Saxony, Germany) together with colleagues at the site of Osnabrueck and Fulda. The project investigates how knowledge and data accessibility especially to actors of the food value chain can especially be facilitated by taking a One Health approach to food systems.

 Your tasks:

  • Conduct secondary and primary research in the food sector
  • Design and conduct inventories, focus groups, interviews and surveys / economic experiments with consumers, chefs and other stakeholders
  • Conduct qualitative as well as quantitative and econometric data analysis
  • Present and publish your research to stakeholders, colleagues as well as on conferences to a wider international audience  
  • Prepare and submit a PhD thesis or other qualification

Requirements

  • An excellent MSc degree in agricultural or food economics, economics, nutrition, health and food systems, psychology or related field (close to completion is also possible)
  • Experience with quantitative research methods and statistical software (eg, R, stata)
  • Experience with qualitative research methods and statistical software (eg MaxQDA)
  • Interest in and knowledge about agriculture, food systems and gastronomic services in Germany (or the EU)
  • Willingness to engage in communication with producers, chefs, civil society and other stakeholders
  • Strong English language skills (written and spoken); German language skills are an asset
  • Self-motivated with an ability to work independently
