The Research Department Viral Zoonoses – One Health, headed by Prof. Dr. Gül?ah Gabriel investigates the interspecies transmission of influenza A viruses from animals to humans and the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis in humans, particularly with regard to risk factors (pregnancy, obesity, and gender dependence). The aim of the department is to identify and characterize viral and cellular determinants that contribute to the increased pathogenicity and transmission of influenza viruses in humans. In addition, we also translate our knowledge on influenza viruses to other respiratory viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 and RSV. In the long term, we will use acquired knowledge on common pathogenicity factors to develop new antiviral strategies.
