Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf Hedwig and Waldemar Hort Scholarship Foundation 2026

The foundation was established in 1990 by Dr. Hedwig Hort and her husband, Prof. Dr. Waldemar Hort, the former director of the Institute of Pathology at Heinrich Heine University. Since 1993, it has awarded annual scholarships to students of Heinrich Heine University and was significantly increased in 2004 by a donation from Johanna Krüger, a resident of Düsseldorf.


The foundation offers suitable students from all faculties of Heinrich Heine University the opportunity to work on scientific topics or acquire additional knowledge during a study stay of up to three months, either in Germany or abroad.

  • A funding amount from 1.000,00 to 3.000,00 EUR will be provided.

Requirements

  • Scholarships are open to students from all faculties of Heinrich Heine University, starting in their fourth semester, who wish to work on research topics or acquire additional knowledge during a study abroad period of up to three months, either in Germany or abroad.
  • Applicants should have a strong academic record (GPA of no more than 2.5).

Selection Process

  • Shortlisted scholarship applicants present their plans orally to the board of trustees in a 10-minute presentation before the end of the respective winter semester. The presentation is then discussed, and the board's decision is communicated shortly thereafter.
     

Application Documents

The application must include:

1. A brief CV with address, details of current course of study, and the desired degree.

2. Certificates of all examinations taken during the course of study to date, copies of all graded transcripts, and the contact information of a professor who can provide information about the applicant.

3. A detailed description of the project, including the following optional information:

  • Origin of the idea for the project
  • Clearly defined goal of the project
  • Planned, staggered workflow
  • Formulation of a possible result
  • Explanation of the duration
  • Information about existing contacts with scientists at the intended place of residence
  • Information on access to archives and libraries at the intended place of stay (opening hours during the planned stay?)
  • What are the advantages of working abroad on-site when it comes to scholarships abroad?


4. A breakdown of the anticipated costs (travel expenses, accommodation, and additional meal costs compared to Düsseldorf).

5. A written declaration that no other institution has provided financial support for the requested purpose, nor will provide such support after receiving funding approval from the Hort Foundation.
